Roll Call: New Idols

SO, what is it like to join the cast of one of the biggest movie franchises on the planet?

The three young actors whom Walt Disney Pictures enrolled in “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” as the next generation of teenage idols — the new Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu, if you will — looked at one another with pinwheels in their eyes.

“It’s just crazy, like suddenly I have paparazzi,” said Matt Prokop, a lanky 18-year-old who plays a sophomore basketball player, and apprentice hunk to Mr. Efron’s dreamboat character.

“Oh my God,” squealed Jemma McKenzie-Brown, a 14-year-old British actress

whose character, Tiara, is a protégé of Ms. Tisdale’s persnickety Sharpay. “I got paparazzied, too!”

Justin Martin, also 14, shook his head and kicked back on a sofa at the Hollywood bowling alley where the three was hanging out a few days before the film’s premiere. “You get used to it, y’all,” said Mr. Martin, his Southern accent showing.

Mr. Martin plays an insecure sophomore who idolizes Mr. Bleu’s character in “High School Musical 3,” which opens Friday. But for the moment, he was playing the seasoned professional. As Ms. Brown ate pizza, he recounted an anecdote from when he starred in “The Lion King” on Broadway.

Mr. Prokop, his jeans slumping dangerously low, was more interested in showing off by helping Ms. McKenzie-Brown improve her bowling.

“Come here and I’ll teach you,” he said to his co-star, who had complained about throwing a series of gutter balls. She gladly accepted the offer.

Next up: Mr. Martin.

As he selected a ball and walked to the lane, the other two held hands and complimented him on his black T-shirt. “That’s really cool,” Ms. McKenzie-Brown said. “Where’s it from?”

Mr. Martin shrugged. “I got it at a gifting suite,” he said, referring to the freebie-stuffed hotel rooms where celebrities are encouraged to graze.

The three agreed that their new stardom had put demands on their wardrobe. Mr. Prokop was forced to wake up at 10 a.m. to meet with a stylist to select an outfit for the premiere. Ms. McKenzie-Brown had spent the day trying on about 15 dresses. Mr. Martin complained that the stylists didn’t understand his look.

“In that one picture the studio took, I look mad stupid,” he said.

Now it was Mr. Prokop’s turn to strike a professional pose.

“Be thankful of the studio,” he said. “It’s because of them that we get to wear this cool stuff.”

Mr. Martin’s turn hadn’t gone so well. His first ball went straight into the gutter. The second knocked over a lone pin.

“I quit,” he said.

One of Mr. Prokop’s friends suggested wrapping up the bowling party. Earlier it had been suggested they walk down Hollywood Boulevard to an old-fashioned soda fountain for ice cream.

“Nah, I’m having too much fun here,” Mr. Prokop said, smiling at Ms. McKenzie-Brown, who signaled that she also wanted to stay.

Did Mr. Martin want to give the pins another shot?

“All right, guys,” he said. “Game on.”
